27 September 2008 Chapter X Rally
Write-up by Nancy & Tom Byrd
Saturday morning found the temperature in the low 60s when Dave Weaver, Mike & Ako Mills, Steve & Susan Ochs, and Tom & Nancy Byrd met at YOSA. Dave, who was leading the ride to Corpus Christi, advised the route would be 1518 to 1604 to IH 35. Speed would be about 70 on the interstate and verified that was agreeable with everyone. A planned stop would be made on IH37 at a rest area about mile marker 80. Due to pulling a trailer, Steve & Susan agreed to run in the drag position. Traffic was fairly light and the group encountered no problems the entire trip. The roadside park where the group took a 15 minute break was clean and well equipped, to include vending machines inside the facility.

After the break, the group proceeded on to Corpus Christi where we met up with J.D. & Millie Kvapil and Bill and Jane Johnson, who had obtained tables for Chapter U U U U. We checked out the silent auction tables and met with old friends and new ones. There was coffee, water, soft drinks, and pastries available so as is popular with Chapter U, we ate some of them. As time passed, numbers were posted for door prizes. J.D. won a package of hazelnut coffee and Tom won a package of coffee filters.

An Elvis impersonator was entertaining the visitors with song and dance. As you might imagine, many of the women just had to have their picture taken with him. Guess we should consider them his "groupies". One individual won(???) the opportunity to be an Elvis impersonator and was given a cape, wig, and glasses. All got a good laugh with his movements. No one from Chapter U won the grand prizes, but Millie won a Las Vegas musical bear, Jane won a pair of pearl ear rings, and J.D. won a container of candy and a $25.00 gift certificate. Lunch consisted of fried chicken, dirty rice, and bears, along with drinks and desserts.

Prior to the closing of the rally, Steve promoted the Chapter UUUU rally and invited all to register and attend. We said good by to old and new friends and headed to the gas station to refuel. Steve & Susan said their good bys and prepared to head to Las Vegas. Once refueled, Dave led Mike & Ako, J.D. & Millie, Bill & Jane, and Tom & Nancy back toward San Antonio. We again stopped at the roadside park about mile marker 80 and found the facility was air conditioned and as clean as the one earlier in the day. As the group prepared to depart the rest area, we said out good bys as riders would be dropping off along the way and heading to their homes. The ride and rally were enjoyable and apparently all had a great time.
