7 Nov Pre-ride

Pictures & Write-up by Skip Surre

.

I decided I should do a pre-ride for this upcoming ride I only had a couple of problems. First believe it or not I have never ridden the Twisted Sisters, Two I didn’t know were the restaurant was. I asked Mike Mills if he knew where it was and of course Mike had answer to my questions. While we were talking Kenny Jordan added to the conversation about roads and routes to take. Olin Gover was there and he was ready for the challenge of setting up a new ride.

We agreed to meet at Sammy’s restaurant in Castroville. Mike and Kenny were going to ride in from New Braunfels and Olin and I met up at 410 and 90. The rendezvous time was 0800. Now upon leaving my house I encountered a fairly thick fog. I was cruising down 90 and then I heard Olin calling me on the CB. We met up on the roll and made our way to Sammy’s. We arrived early and Olin brought his map books into the restaurant and I knew I was working with a great pre-ride team. We were discussing routes to use when Mike and Kenny arrived. We had a great breakfast and mounted our trusty Goldwings.

The fog was still very much with us and we were glad we dressed for the weather. We made the our way west on 90 until we reached the greater Sabinal metropolitan area and headed north on 187. By the time we reached Utopia the sun was beginning to peak in and out and the fog was burning off. We headed west on 1050 and then north on 83. I was glad Kenny was leading as he guided us through the always-confusing clover-leaf in downtown Leakey. We made a left on 337 and the fun began. The group twisted and turned it’s way to Camp Wood. Then north on 55 and a slight right turn onto 335 north. The sun was warming and partly cloudy Soon we made the intersection of 335 and 41 and a right turn headed us east bound. We enjoyed the fairly straight 41 and then we made a right turn onto 336 headed south. It was some awesome riding as we made our way through the elevation changes and bends of this road. Once again into Leakey and a left onto 337 east. We stopped for some liquid refreshment and some conversation on lunch. Olin suggested a nice place in Blanco and we were on our way. Great minds think alike as we all ordered chicken fried steak and with our bellies full we made a left onto 16 and headed toward our homes.

My language skills can’t begin to describe how enjoyable this ride was. We experienced great riding, witnessed some less than advised passing techniques by our friends riding bikes built for speed over comfort (or common sense). The police were present on several of the roads we used.  We traveled about 300+ miles on this ride. When this ride is put on the ride schedule please come and ride with us and enjoy some of the best riding and scenery our Texas has to offer.
