31 October Halloween Ride
Pictures and write-up by Skip Surre
I got up early as usual on this day and was letting our sons (the dogs) out. As I filled the outside water dish I decided that I needed the jacket liner and my chaps for today’s Mike Mills led ride. As I preformed my safety checks I decided to get my gloves that I bought at Cabella’s during a previous ride. This morning felt chiller than last weeks ride. I mounted up and started north on 281.
I arrived at the Exxon and Mike Whiteside had already arrived. Soon riders began arriving: Mike Mills, Court and Diane VanSickler, Gary Lewis, Bob and Kay Finch who invited friends Ron and Kris Harvey, Mike and Alice Rodriguez on their 2000 trike, Olin Gover on “Flyin Low”, and Kenny Jordan. Mike Mills gave us our pre-ride safety brief. We lined up to get onto 281 north. The sun was out and the sky was cloudless and blue you couldn’t ask for a better day to ride.
As we rode we saw many other bikes and we knew that they were enjoying their day of riding just as much as we were. I would love to be able to tell you the route and at the beginning of the ride I was trying to remember all of the roads and turns. It wasn’t long until I realized this was a fruitless effort so I just concentrated on performing my duties as drag and enjoyed the ride. Mike had Kenny dragging for group one and I was dragging for Court who was leading group two. Soon we were in the bustling metropolis of Dripping Springs and our Road Captain called for a break at the Shell station there. We all dismounted and took a well-deserved break.
We were back on the road and headed to the group’s choice for lunch the Saltlick restaurant. The food was great and by the lack of conversation at the table after the food arrived everyone enjoyed the fare. After lunch we cranked up our faithful mounts and were on the road again. Mike asked if I wanted to do a photo opportunity at the dam at Canyon Lake. We took some time to enjoy the lake and were back on the road. We had a day of riding great two lane and smaller roads. Mike decided to head for River Rd. This road is one of my favorites and today was a perfect day to ride it. We had to share the road with bicycles but we all enjoyed the road.
If you have ever rode with Mike in the lead you know were the ride ends. Yup, you guessed it DQ. Mike informed up that there is always room for ice cream because it’s soft and it squishes between the food you have already eaten. We enjoyed the ice cream and the friendship of our friends both old and new. Everyone enjoyed the ride. Mike Mills once again led us on a terrific ride. If you didn’t ride with us on this ride you missed a great one. We hope to see you on our next ride.
