2 August 08 Ride to the Oasis Restaurant
Pictures by Mike Mills & Susan Ochs
Chapter U had once before visited the Oasis Restaurant up on Lake Travis outside of Austin. Since our last visit, the Oasis had suffered a devastating fire, and we had heard that it the rebuilt Oasis was gorgeous. So some intrepid Riders/Co-Riders set off on a fine Saturday morning to check out to see if the rumors were true. We were glad to see Gary Lewis join us whom we haven’t seen for quite a while. Jack Dowda rode his GL 1000, and Brad and I were on our GL 1500. The rest of our group (Connie and Ken Jordan and Mike and Ako Mills) were on their GL 1800's and acted as Drags for Brad and I.

3 bikes at YOSA Plus Sue Ochs in her truck! Picked up two more bikes at the EXXON
It was a nice size small group that wound its way northeast over hill and dale. We had Sue Ochs trailing us in her pickup (Steve was working). Never let it be said that no Rider means no riding! Our Drag made sure to keep an eye to the front and to the rear, and we made it through the 12 stoplights on 620 in good shape to pull into the Oasis just as it opened! We had our pick of parking in the lot closest to the restaurant!

On the road picture! Just arrived at the Oasis.
As we walked up to the front of the new Oasis, it was evident that there was a lot to see. The restaurant is now several stories high, seems to have several buildings attached, and has sculpture everywhere (true to the old Oasis). What was really great was that there are 3 new, large balconies off the main restaurant, complete with overhead cover and fans blowing so we could sit outside, enjoy the 180 degree view, and feel a breeze typical of 5-8 mph (at least from the Co-Rider’s seat!). In truth, it was more than we could imagine, and we had to check out all the man-made statuary and natural scenery.

Wild exterior at the Oasis. Picture of our group...All smiles!

4 pictures stitched together for the panoramic! The view was almost 180 degrees!

Awesome views of the lake!! An some really nice homes!
Oh yes, a Co-Rider planned ahead and brought out a binoculars to check out the infamous Hippie Hallow! You can take my word for it that all we could see were whether or not people were wearing clothes but it was fun to see more boats and people enjoy the Hollow as we munched on our lunches!

Ken & Connie brought binoculars! For what you may ask...?

How about trying to get a view of Hippie Hallow...nude beach!!

See no evil, hear no evil, say no evil! ...or maybe monkey see monkey do! |
Chilling it in the shade waiting for the girls! |

Jack?........................Jack!!!! No! You can't take this back to San Antonio!
After perusing the gift shop, we headed towards home, planning on not only a gas stop but also a DQ stop! We were ready for lots of ice cream and cold drinks by the time we got to the Wimberly DQ. Yes, we had “Turtle Sundaes on a Saturday.” Makes it seem even more fun. What a decadent day…delightful Hill Country route, lunch with a spectacular water view, and DQ to cool off prior to the last push home. Yes, we managed to slide home before the temperature really hit the high end of the mercury, and we really enjoyed our ride. Hope you can join us next time we head for the Oasis!

The traditional DQ stop on the way back!
