29 August Breakfast Ride

Write-up by Gary Skorman                            Pictures by Skip Surre

The temperature was a perfect 72 degrees when we met at YOSA today. We had 18 riders on 3 trikes and 10 bikes. Gary (led the ride), Robert & Nancy (glad that you could join us), Steve & Donna (always good to see you), Ken & Connie (great to see Ken riding again), Steve (New CD) Ochs, Brad & Jill (thanks for your service), Luis & Ida (Congrats on the new 1800), Raul (Luis’s friend-good to see you again), Mike Mills (former ride coordinator), Skip (my co-ride coordinator), Olin (always our pleasure), Robert (Brad & Jill’s Retired SAPD neighbor). Jack Dowda joined us in route.

Lots of folks got their early!                                                Olin with his trike!

Nice to see Ken & Connie back on the bike!                                                 Steve & Donna rolling in!

Luis Flores (w/vest) and friend Raul!                                A Skip "On the road" pic!

As we headed for “our highway” FM1518, many of us saw the Adopt a Highway GWRRA Chapter U sign for the first time. The sign is located on the South side of FM 1518 just past Gillman Honda.

12 bikes are in the picture if you look close! Skip is in the 13th taking the picture!

After a nice 20-minute ride we arrived at the Ranch House for breakfast. They are only open for breakfast on the weekends. The special of the day seemed to be the popular choice. 2 eggs, Bacon or Sausage, Hash Browns, & Toast for $2.95. It was both reasonable and delicious.

Bikes at the Ranch House!                                                One of two long tables we had!

Luis & Brad's friend Robert with Gary.                                A little girl talk...probably shopping!

With full bellies most of us proceeded to ride over to Floresville. Our route took us through LaVernia, toward Stockdale. I found a road on MapQuest that looked interesting called Old Floresville Rd. (CR401). I did not get time to pre-ride it but decided to try it anyway. It looked promising as we left Hwy 87, reasonably paved, through some ranchland, lots of shade trees and some good curves. Unfortunately, after the first jog (at CR307) we found ourselves on a road that quickly turned to all gravel.

More of Skip's "On the Road" pictures. Headed to Floresville

Looks like a nice road...                                             Oops! Seems to be going bad quick! Gravel!!!

We turned around, headed back to CR307 and then took HWY 97 into Floresville. In Floresville several folks headed right for home but the rest went to the Floresville Nursing Center to visit with Bill & Jane.

Donna & Ida with Jane!                                                        The guys with Bill!

They were happy to see us. They are improving every day. The Center allows them to leave to go home, for a few hours, once a week. They will be doing that this Sunday. Jane said they would probably be at the center for two-three more weeks before they can go home for good. Bill said he is ready to get back on his bike, but of course the Doctor won’t let him. He is also talking about “triking it out” as Jane is a just little apprehensive about riding on two wheels again. All in all it was wonderful to see how good looked.

Of course there was a DQ stop!

When we left, several folks headed home, but the die-hards Skip, Mike, Steve Ochs, & I made our obligatory stop at DQ before saying our goodbyes and heading off into the sun, homeward bound.
