15 August 09 Breakfast Ride

(Or it could be named does Skip need a GPS?)

The troops once again began gathering at YOSA for the breakfast run Steve & Susan Ochs, Mike Mills, Steve & Donna Van Gilder, Gary Lewis, Olin Gover, and Beth. Mike Mills led us to one of our favorite spots Grumpy’s Mexican Restaurant.  Court & Diane Van Sickler joined us there and after a short wait we were seated and the coffee was flowing. We ordered breakfast (and if you have never had a breakfast taco there they are huge) and we were actively engaged in conversation about motorcycle riding and were to ride. The food arrived and their wasn’t much conversation for a few minutes. One more cup of Joe and we were out on the bikes ready for a ride.

We made the left on Nacogdoches and we were rolling. We made a left on 3009 and we were cruising along nicely. The ride was progressing smoothly with some concern about a deer about ten feet off the side of the road on our side. With a left on Smithson Valley Rd. Everything was going just perfect. We were approaching 311 when a voice in my ear (Court) asked me if we were going to turn left on 311. No, I assured him we were on the right road.

Now I would like to interject at this point that there are a few things being a Road Captain entails that can shake your confidence.

1.     Having the group make a u-turn because you missed a turn. (I personally have done this twice. Both times I missed the same turn!)

2.     When you make a turn and realize that you are not on the road you should be on.

Now realizing I have just performed #2 I immediately pull into the Valero station on the right side of the road. The group follows me into the station. My friends at this point come to my assistance. Court just looks at me and smiles because he knows I should have made the left onto 311. Mike pulls up to the gas pump and tries to cover my mistake by filling his bike with fuel. Steve knows that I am not going to find Rebecca Creek Rd. off of 2673 because it dead ends at the marina at Crains Mill Park. Steve then reminds me that you are never lost on a Goldwing it’s just a new adventure. We gather to formulate a new plan. OK, let’s got to TJ’s in Sattler and dropp of the flyers for the Rally.  Great! Then we’ll ride River Rd. down to the 337 loop and stop for ice cream at the Dairy Queen on business 35 south. ALRIGHT, we are off and rolling again. We shopped at TJ’s for a bit and then on to River Rd. The traffic was like and we rolled beside the river and enjoyed the road.

It seemed in no time we were at the DQ enjoying a well deserved ice cream. I figured that this would be the end point of the ride. It was either Steve or Court who said “you know that Kenny and Connie Jordan’s 2005 1800 is up here at IH-35 Honda and we need to drop off some flyers there anyway. Soon Mike, Steve, Susan, Court, Diane, Beth, and I are there. I was looking at the bike and soon we were taking her out for a test ride…………..We’ll have to wait to see how this one ends.

I want to thank all of the riders for there help on this ride and for being such a great group to ride with. Like Charlie Brown always says “God, I love riding with these people” Charlie I couldn’t say it better.
