18 June Chapter Gathering

Summer came early here in the San Antonio area (was it 100 degrees?) but 29 hearty riders and co-riders braved the heat to meet ‘n greet at Chapter U’s monthly gathering.  It seems like we are getting an earlier and earlier start on the greetin’ and eatin’ part as there was a good number of us already seated waiting for our dinner!  The room filled up, and trays of food arrived and disappeared (the club sandwich seemed to be the most popular!), and the information sharing part of the monthly gathering began.

Brad put out some decisions made due to the recent rally meeting held at Archie and Sharon Haley’s house.  JD Kvapil, our Rally Coordinator, reminded committee chairs to keep feeding him information updates through the summer!  Brad also discussed the upcoming chapter picture to be taken at Canyon Lake Dam on Saturday, June 21st.  Details are on the chapter website and everyone was reminded to wear their red chapter shirts (or just any red shirt)!

Nice an comfortable with only 29 on hand. We always welcome more though!

Court Van Sickler shared a lesson learned about 4 wheelers (and more) filling space occupied by a 2 or 3 wheel, and Charlie Brown shared his recent purchase of a “camel” hydrating type system purchased at Costco for $20!  Everyone be sure to stay hydrated in this high heat.  Duke Thompson even brought an example of a reasonably priced cooling vest available online with speedy delivery!  Now no one in Chapter U has a reason to not be well hydrated this summer!

Court also announced that Steve Ochs had received his Rider Education Level 3 while he was at the District rally!  Congratulations Steve!

Martha with a box of shirts!                        Linda checking the crowd to sell tickets

From the Co-Rider’s Corner, the two proposed pin designs for the First Annual “Hallo-Wings” Rally were presented for a voting to determine which design to use.  We appreciate both submissions and while it was a close vote, the “witch” design by Cindy Edmonds is going to be on our first rally pin!  We have a lot of creative people in Chapter U, and I know that Susan Ochs who is heading up our chapter scrapbook committee is always look for help!

Our Horizons training to be held here July 26 & 27 at YOSA has 20 planned participants.  There is still room for a few more, and more information will be coming out on this GWRRA leadership training.  We appreciate everyone in Chapter U who is willing to make the time and FUN commitment to attend this District-sponsored training.  It reflects that we have members who want to make sure Chapter U continues to be FUN and to be around in San Antonio.  The regular Friday night ride that weekend will be on Saturday so we can have a dinner ride for any out-of-town GWRRA members who attend the seminar with Chapter U!

Phylis Pesta had a great surprise for us!   Nice t-shirt Phylis!

After Phyllis Pesta added a special “show and tell” relating to Chapter “U” (see the pictures here) we pulled tickets for the many door prizes for this meeting.  Lots of handy motorcycle-oriented goodies such as waterless hand cleaner, magnet trays for holding screws and nails, and a gas siphoning kit!  Our own Ron and Maria De Laughter donated two $20 gift certificates good for their Gold Wing-related accessory business www.cowhidecovers.com. Olin & Martha Gover and Tom & Nancy Byrd also donated prizes.   A new restaurant chain in town, “The Egg and I” (there is one located at 281 and Thousand Oaks) donated a $20 gift certificate good for breakfast or lunch.  Joe Harrison Motorcycle donated a $75 gift certificate and CycleRider donated a certificate for an oil change.  When you see our sponsors, make sure you identify yourself as a member of Chapter U and tell them you appreciate their support of our chapter!  Thanks to the chapter members who brought or picked up items for door prizes this month!

Dave Weaver, our Membership Enhancement Coordinator, talked about developing a chapter mascot.  There have already been a few suggestions relating to the letter “U” and possible slogans…”u”nicorns, stallions, longhorns and mules!  If you have a suggestion for the mascot and/or a good chapter slogan, let any of the chapter staff know!

Nice to see John Simonick!                               Charlie with his COSTO hydration pack!

Ron & Maria Delaughter                                       Now retired Duke Thompson!

Linda & Jack                                                     Archie & Sharon Haley

Ako Mills recently had surgery (and just got home Thursday night) AND it was so hot, we decided to start a new chapter tradition…adjourning to a local DQ for ice cream for a refreshing dessert after the meeting!  Thirteen chapter members enjoyed ice cream to cap off our June gathering, and Ako, we missed you and hope you appreciate that we ate some ice cream for you too!
