16 May 08 Chapter Gathering

The April Chapter Monthly Gathering saw Chapter U with a bit of room to breathe with 29 folks attending and lots of folks out of town or otherwise occupied.  This gave the rest of us enough room to spread out and not lock elbows!  The Longhorn Cafe had “our” room set up with lots of extra tables and chairs and even our “GWRRA Texas Chapter U Meets Here” sign posted up on the podium at the front of the room!  Charlie Brown was joined by Linda Brackeen in selling raffle prize tickets, and Linda now has the title “Ticket Lady” as Charlie jokes that he has been replaced!  Go Linda and thanks for taking on this duty!  Millie Kvapil sold lots of special Christmas drawing tickets!  After starting the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and announcements, we heard from both Charlie Brown and Court Van Sickler on education with Charlie focusing on 3 wheels and Court focusing on 2 wheels!  Of course participating in our Rider Education Program is a benefit of membership, and Dave Weaver, our Membership Enhancement Coordinator, is right on top of talking to our Chapter U members about the benefits of belonging to GWRRA!

Great group of 29 for the April meeting. Bit small than the 47 in March!!!

JD Kvapil, Chapter U Rally Coordinator, gave an update on rally planning which will go into high gear in the near future.  The donation letter has been finalized and is available for anyone seeking donations.  JD asked the committee chairs to keep in contact with him either via phone or mail.  A nice surprise is that Richard Perez and Lisa Moore confirmed they wanted to get married at our rally in October so we will be working to make this first rally extra special for them as well as our rally attendees and our sponsored charity.

Jill Severe talked about how Horizons training (last weekend in July) is a unique opportunity for our chapter membership to attend leadership training usually only offered an overnight’s distance away.  This training seminar is going to be advertised throughout our district and region so it will also be an opportunity showcase our chapter to GWRRA members from other chapters who attend the seminar.  We are planning a special Saturday night ride instead of the usual Friday night Chapter ride that weekend so that our chapter can meet visitors to San Antonio and we can have an extra level of FUN in the Horizons seminar we host!  Once you attend Horizons, you can buy a special “GWRRA Leadership Training” badge on which you can hang different rockers indicating the different GWRRA training you have attended.  So far only Jill and Brad Severe and Charlie and Candy Brown have these badges in Chapter U!  It was nice after the meeting that several more people decided to join the FUN and attend our Horizons seminar in July.

Millie and Charlie selling tickets                       Dave Weaver talking member enhancement!

Mike Mills, Chapter U Ride Coordinator, talked about past and upcoming rides.  Mike has been working extra hard to continue our unusual and varied ride schedule, and he thanked members for their past contributions and encouraged them to keep sending him the great ideas.  He took an informal poll at the meeting and it seemed a lot of people were interested in overnight rides so watch for more information to come.

After lots of ticket-drawing to give away lots of raffle prizes (thanks to everyone who brought something and our sponsors Joe Harrison Motorsports and Cycle Rider!), and even more discussion and laughing, the gathering was officially ended.  Unofficially the laughing and talking continue for a while longer and from our gathering room out into the parking lot.  Another great monthly chapter gathering with Chapter U!
