From
Cooper Smith...
Greetings,
I had a wonderful opportunity for a portion of the Chapter "U" Goldwing
Riders to be a part of "my ride". I am not only new to riding Goldwings but
I am only 2-3 weeks experienced at riding motorcycles all together.
Originally, I was going to an event in Poth, Tx and must have jotted down
the wrong time/place; but without disappointment I meet up with Mike, Steve
& Sue who were going to Alamo City in Brackettville, Tx. I have to admit
that I was nervous about participating in a group ride, something I have
never done before. All Three Wingers, took me under their wing (intentional
pun) and put me at ease by explaining how things would go, different hand
signals and communications that might occur. They also explained that this
is really "my ride" with some extra members joining along.
As we rode off into the morning sunrise I was thinking "what in the world
did I get myself into". But as I was riding I definitely did not feel
alone, they radioed road hazards, lane placement, construction tips. There
is an indescribable feeling of bliss while riding through the highways that
can only be explained by someone who has experienced it as well. They
really allowed me to build my confidence and help me gain more experience.
I started by mimicking their movements and listening to which hazards were
of greater concern on highways. I learned that even as a group we tend to
be invisible to the other vehicles on the road. When we were about to
arrive to our destination they even warned about the gravel roads and some
helpful tips on survival. I must say that I am not too keen on gravel roads
but I would have been more fearful, possibly to the point of not even
attempting them, without the aid and guidance of the other riders.
After a day of fun and frivolous activities, it was time to return home.
This was definitely more relaxing due to a solid foundation of what to
expect. It provided me with the confidence and control that I was even able
to actually participate in the use of the radio while driving. I even was
bold enough to use the outer pegs; boy did I cool down when using those.
Stopping at each DQ along the way didn't hurt either ;-)
For any future "new" riders out there I truly recommend this group of
folks. They take what you learn in the MSF classes and build upon those
skills. I was able to gain 300 miles under my belt in a safe manner while
still enjoying one outstanding ride… It has truly made a lifetime
impression on me and has sparked a desire to be able to return the favor; I
do realize that I still have a long way to go. Mike, Steve and Sue, I thank
you for everything and look forward to other activities.
Cheers,
Cooper
